The internet is no longer necessary

Google Home Hubs Become More Independent – Can do tasks whith no Internet connection

The Matter standard makes Google products less dependent on the internet.

Google has now started updating several of its devices with Matter, which will make the devices less dependent on the internet. In practice, this means that devices such as Google Nest hubs and speakers, Chromecasts, Google TV devices with Android 14, and some LG TVs can now control Matter devices entirely locally, without an internet connection. This is because Matter devices can communicate with each other locally over a common protocol. Previously, Google Home relied on cloud connection for device control, but now Google Assistant can control, for example, lights even if the internet connection is down.

Google is also opening up its Home APIs to all developers, making it possible for them to integrate Google Home devices and automations into their own apps. This could mean a wave of new and innovative solutions for smart homes in the future.
