Stopped casting

Chromecast has stopped working - here's how to solve the problem: Avoid factory reset

Among other things, the second generation Chromecast has stopped working. In new guidelines, Google advises avoiding factory resetting the device.

The older streaming devices Chromecast 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio have stopped working and can no longer cast either video or audio. Additionally, a warning is displayed that the device is perceived as unreliable and unable to be verified.

There is still no known method to bypass the warning, such as by restarting or factory resetting. However, the screensaver with time, weather, and pictures continues to function without issue. Google is aware of this problem and is working on a solution.

Newer models like Chromecast 3rd Gen and Chromecast Ultra are reportedly not affected by the issues that have arisen.

Waiting for Google's fix

Since reports of the problem began to surface, several sources have now claimed that the cause is an expired certificate. The Chromecast devices affected by the problem are about ten years old and have a security certificate valid for ten years, which expired on 9 March 2025. This is a problem that Google should be able to solve, and users who have been in contact with Google have indeed received information that Google is aware of the problem and is working on a solution.

The safest course of action is therefore to just wait for Google to resolve the issue. If you want to do something yourself before then, there are reports on Reddit where the problem was first highlighted, stating that users have managed to get their devices working by resetting and then setting the date to before 9 March 2005. However, this is a method that Google now advises users against

In a message, Google confirms that they are working on a solution and will announce when it is available. In the meantime, they advise against performing a factory reset on the devices, and if you have already done so, Google says that instructions to get the device working again will also be provided as soon as possible.

The advice from Google comes late, as their own support page on troubleshooting still states that a factory reset is a method, and many users have therefore already done it. Google's promise is that even these users will receive instructions on how to get their devices working again.
