Review: Cheap headphones deliver top class - Huawei Freebuds Pro 5

With Freebuds Pro 5, Huawei establishes itself as a headphone manufacturer to be reckoned with.

These headphones impress especially in call sound and when you listen to music and suit most people, whether you use an iPhone or an Android.

I would say that Huawei with these headphones establishes itself as a company in sound. Otherwise, in recent years they have mostly focused on smartwatches, but step by step advanced also in sound. The Freebuds Pro 5 headphones have improvements on several levels, with sharpened noise reduction, better music sound and really impressive call sound. All this together means that Huawei more clearly establishes itself as one of the best and a player to be reckoned with in headphones.

Proves top class

Just recently, I and Mobil have tested a number of headphones of exactly this type. In-ear headphones with rubber plugs that shut out the outside world and create their own bubble where nothing disturbs. That combined with smart features, stable connection and high-resolution sound is required in the top class where even Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro, Apple Airpods Pro 3 and Sony WF-1000XM6 are established. Huawei does not beat the competitors in all areas, but can definitely measure up to the best and proves that they now belong in the top class.

The market for headphones must be one of the most competitive. It is relatively easy to develop a headphone model with the help of subcontractors, but quite another to do so in the form of a model that makes an impression and stands out from the crowd. As a mobile manufacturer, you have a slight advantage, take for example the newcomer Nothing, which started with headphones before making their first phone. As a mobile manufacturer, you can create an appealing ecosystem of products where headphones and phones fit like hand in glove, with smooth installation, easy switching between devices, and high-resolution sound.

High-resolution sound and good app for IOS and Android

Basically, Huawei is of course a mobile manufacturer, even though they haven't sold phones here in Sweden for several years. Therefore, it becomes extra important for Huawei that the headphones work with high quality and seamlessly regardless of which mobile you connect the headphones to. Huawei Freebuds Pro 5 succeeds with all of this. Those who connect the headphones to an Android can use high-resolution sound with the LDAC protocol, which is standard in almost all Android mobiles. Sometimes you may need to manually activate the support in your phone, in the bluetooth settings.

The next important feature is usability, and with its relatively new app Huawei Audio Connect, which is available for both Android and iPhone, Huawei lays a good foundation for that as well. Here I can easily manage connections between multiple devices, regardless of whether they are Androids or Apple gadgets.

The app allows you to customise the sound as you want it, with an equaliser, but there are also several ready-made profiles to choose from. In the app, you can also control and adjust gesture control, the ability to answer with head movements, and for example, the settings for spatial sound. Here, quite simply, is most of what you can expect from a top-class headset, and head movements mean you can shake your head or nod to answer or reject calls when your hands are occupied.

Excellent sound for music and calls

When it comes to calls and sound quality, Huawei truly excels. Both I and the person I call can hear each other well in different environments, but especially with a lot of disturbing background noise, the headphones impress. I stand outside the office next to a noisy roadwork just as a bus passes by. When I then apologise during a call for perhaps not being heard, the person I'm speaking to asks what I mean and informs me that they can hear me perfectly.

One of the other important strengths is noise cancellation. It is a feature where several properties work together. The fit is the foundation, because if the earplugs do not seal tightly, the effect will suffer. Then the headphones work to detect and neutralise disturbing sounds. I test the Freebuds Pro 5 in a busy urban environment, on public transport, during flights, and in office landscapes while comparing how the headphones sound with other comparable models. I immediately notice when the noise cancellation kicks in and in most environments, it is very effective. Sometimes Apple Airpods Pro 3 are more effective at noise cancellation, but the overall impression is still good.

Huawei Freebuds Pro 5 are cheaper than the competitors I mentioned, but despite that, they deliver at a similar level in most areas.
