Impresses in many ways

Review: Oppo Find X9 Pro - Top class

Oppo Find X9 Pro is the sharpest flagship in the Find X9 family where we previously tested the slightly simpler Find X9. There are rumours of an upcoming Ultra model, but at the time of writing, the Pro model is the one in the family that offers the most. Compared directly with the base model, the Pro offers more zoom, megapixels, and performance.

This is quite evident, that Oppo has not held back. The Oppo Find X9 Pro achieves the best results ever in our battery tests while the performance is also among the best we have measured. If I continue my praises, I can add that the screen is top-notch, with excellent colour reproduction, details, brightness, and responsiveness. If I see any negative consequence of this, it is that the phone itself, as a result, becomes quite large and heavy. The weight is a full 224 grams, but the device is also built with luxurious materials and feels truly solid.

Continued collaboration with Hasselblad

The main feature of this phone is, of course, the cameras and Oppo's continued and deepened collaboration with the camera manufacturer Hasselblad. Unlike its sister company Oneplus, which has ended its collaboration with Hasselblad, Oppo still maintains its partnership, and it shows in practice in several ways. It is not entirely clear what Hasselblad has practically contributed that Oppo could not manage themselves, but in this phone, we have a telephoto lens with a 200-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom signed by Hasselblad. This means that in the camera app, I can zoom up to 120x, with AI support, and the images remain sharp and good up to 100x. You can see a clear effect of the post-processing then, images that are blurry at the time of the photo can become significantly sharper after a few seconds when the processing is complete. Then, of course, another question is how often you really benefit from zooming so much; it is probably not very often.

Good because the cameras deliver good results even at closer range. Above all, the cameras in the Oppo Find X9 Pro provide consistent quality in terms of colour reproduction, dynamic range, and details. The images have a natural style and turn out well even in slightly poorer light, and the images often have a nice depth and provide a natural bokeh effect with a sharp subject and fine blur in the background, for example, portraits or close-ups. What Hasselblad has contributed to this may not matter much. More importantly, Oppo seems to be delivering on their promise when they launched their new Lumo image engine, which was supposed to provide natural colours among many other things to the images taken.

Several unique possibilities

The camera app offers plenty of opportunities to get the most out of the camera system, which the hardware enables in combination with software. A special “Master” mode gives you extended possibilities to influence the result with light, vignetting, saturation, and sharpness. The app also features a special panorama mode provided by Hasselblad, and you can take pictures in 50 and 200 megapixels full resolution in “Hasselblad Hi-Res,” and indeed the level of detail is impressive when I zoom and pan around in those images, but more on a technical level. I mean, practically, you are wiser to crop your images and, if needed, zoom in at the actual photo moment.

On the side of the phone, there is a physical button called the Snap Key. In addition to functioning as a camera button, it can be customised to start the AI function for saving memories, activate silent mode, or perform other actions. Besides having trouble getting it to work, I often accidentally press it when lifting the phone, so the most convenient option is to set it to do nothing. The AI memory function can also be activated by swiping three fingers across the screen. Mind Space, as the AI-supported memory function is called, has equivalents from several mobile manufacturers. It interprets the text content of the screen and adds location and outdoor temperature, but offers very little benefit. Especially when it comes to articles, only what is visible on a screen is included, so it often becomes both incomplete and impractical. Just like many others, Oppo is still exploring what AI can contribute in terms of real benefits.

Additional presence

Oppo is new to the Swedish market, and since we tested the sister model, Oppo is now also available at the retailer Proshop, not just previously at Power. However, the number of sales outlets is still very limited, and Oppo is not available with any of the operators. Oppo Find X9 Pro is, in any case, a clear flagship with its cameras, screen, performance, and battery life. It is not entirely unlike the Oneplus equivalent, Oneplus 15, with which Oppo has a clear kinship. We see clear similarities in the interface, and there are also some pre-installed apps we recognise, such as Zen Mode, which is supposed to help you disconnect and limit screen time. Oppo also has the fast charging called Supervocc, which Oneplus now also has since the companies share a lot of development resources.

Questions and answers

How is the build quality?

It feels like a real quality build, possibly with the downside that the phone becomes a bit heavy. But that might be something you can live with, considering this combination of both performance and battery life.

What does Hasselblad add?

It's a bit unclear. The phone has a Master mode in the camera app that Hasselblad is said to have contributed to, and we have a special panorama mode signed by Hasselblad, as well as the 200-megapixel telephoto camera whose lens they have certified, whatever that means. Oppo has launched a new image engine that handles post-processing with the aim of achieving natural-looking images, and it is not mentioned that Hasselblad was involved at all. And while Oppo has deepened its collaboration with Hasselblad and Oppo's product manager Pete Lau has praised it, the same Pete Lau, as CEO of Oneplus, has said that the collaboration between Oneplus and Hasselblad is no longer needed and that Oneplus has the mindset that has been built up integrated into its DNA even without Hasselblad.

200MP images take a moment to save.

How is the interface?

It's called Color OS and is very similar to what Oneplus has, but still called Oxygen OS. You get a lot of proprietary apps, an Oppo app store in addition to Google Play, an extra browser, Zen Space, notes, and more. AI assistance includes, for example, translation, but only to/from Chinese or English to a handful of other languages, not Swedish.

An alternative

The most obvious competitor is oddly enough the sister model Oneplus 15 which looks very similar and is from the sister brand, also significantly cheaper than Oppo's phone with similar configuration.

Here the images are characterised by natural colour reproduction and extreme zoom capabilities.
