Alternative to American Cloud Storage Giants: Icedrive

British Icedrive can serve as an alternative for those who do not want their cloud storage with any of the American IT giants.

Icedrive is operated by a British company of the same name, founded in 2019, and cloud storage is therefore the company's main business. As the company is young, the service is still developing relatively quickly with new features.

A free subscription gives you 10 GB of storage, more than enough for you to try out how the service works but not enough to save a normal photo gallery from your mobile.

The price of a paid subscription becomes cheaper if you pay for a whole year at a time rather than per month, and in the former case, the price per month is 4 dollars a month, approximately 45 kronor, for 100 GB of storage, 67 kr/month for one terabyte, and 123 kr/month for 3 terabytes. Icedrive also offers lifetime subscriptions, where you pay a one-time fee for permanent access to storage capacity. At the time of writing, it costs 3334 kr for 512 GB, 5340 kr for 2 TB, and 13,368 kr for 10 TB of data. For those planning to dump all their data there at one time and then only retrieve it in an emergency, it is worth mentioning that if you have not accessed your account for 12 months, it will be deleted.

In the app, you browse the files as in a regular file manager. The cloud service has a recycle bin if you delete files, and they remain there; the recycle bin is never emptied automatically. In return, the contents of the recycle bin also count towards your storage capacity until you manually delete the files from there.

If you synchronise content automatically, a folder named auto upload is created, and within it, a folder for your device. In the settings, you can enable automatic syncing of photos and videos. Each device thus has its own folder, which receives an unwieldy name like Samsung SM-S721B B4790721. You can rename the folder yourself, but you cannot have multiple devices sync their content to the same folder.

Icedrive is not necessarily the most mobile-friendly solution for syncing your photos, and it can be impractical for them to be placed in separate folders per device, but the price still makes the service an attractive option.
