Review: Oppo Find X9 - Oppo's first flagship now in Sweden

Oppo is a new acquaintance on the Swedish mobile market and even though they have been present in other European countries for a long time, this is their first flagship model to reach the Swedish market. An opportunity, therefore, to see what this mobile manufacturer is really capable of.

Published

Oppo Find X9 is part of the Find X9 family, which also includes the Find X9 Pro. Initially, Oppo stated that the Pro model would not be available in Sweden, only this base model, but they have now changed their mind, and the Pro model with more zoom and higher performance is also on its way.

With its close relationship to OnePlus, several aspects of Oppo are already familiar to Swedish mobile users. OnePlus is formally a subsidiary of Oppo, and both companies share significant development resources. Their Android versions, for example, have many similarities, the fast charging has the same name, Supervocc, and often the design, when we compare the top models from both companies, has quite a few similarities. Then, even though the two companies are said to operate independently, they have several executives with dual roles. For example, Pete Lau is the product manager at Oppo while also being the founder and current CEO of OnePlus.

Hasselblad to limited help

When OnePlus recently ended its collaboration with camera manufacturer Hasselblad, Oppo retained its partnership. However, it does not make a huge impression when I test the cameras in the Oppo Find X9. The Hasselblad logo is present in the camera module on the back, and there is, for example, a special mode for “Hasselblad high resolution” and Hasselblad's Xpan Panorama” with various colour effects as filters. Hasselblad's involvement otherwise seems limited, and there are no real differences in the photos taken with the regular photo mode compared to Hasselblad's high resolution. Except for the resolution. In the sister model X9 Pro, which has better zoom, the zoom lens is explicitly certified by Hasselblad, but that applies to it and not the phone we are testing now.

The fact that Hasselblad makes a limited impact does not mean that the cameras in this phone are bad in any way. Oppo manages well on its own and I get many good pictures with these cameras even though the sister model X9 Pro is supposed to be slightly better.

Triple camera with moving images

Oppo Find X9 is equipped with three cameras on the back where we first have a main camera with Sony sensor, a wide-angle and finally a telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The back also has a strong photo lamp. All three lenses have fine dynamics and colour reproduction. The main lens uses a sensor called Sony Lytia 808 and the images in Hasselblad high-resolution mode are 50 megapixels, but in normal mode the phone downsamples the images to 12 megapixels, which is common even among many competitors. The wide-angle has autofocus so it can also be used as a macro camera for extreme close-ups.

In the camera app, you can also choose to take “moving images” so that a short film sequence in 4K is also recorded for each still image, a film that can then be used to capture moments you missed by a narrow margin. If you send such an image to an iPhone, the moving image can also be used there, as it follows the same standard.

Interface similar to Oneplus

Oppo's interface is called Color OS and today has striking similarities with Oneplus, as both companies have joint development. For example, we get our own browser in addition to Chrome, we get Zen Space to help you relax, and we have quick response and overall a good flow.

The phone has a button on the side, a physical button clearly inspired by Apple's action button, and this can be pressed to save an active screenshot to Oppo's AI-based memory box. There, the AI interprets the content and adds the time, date, and outdoor temperature when you took the screenshot. The button can also be customised to do other things instead.

The edge of the phone is metal, and it, like the screen and material choices, gives a solid impression with a high-quality feel. It is clearly a flagship, even though the sister model, as mentioned, is slightly better in several areas.

Oppo Find X9 is Oppo's first flagship on the Swedish market, and it is a welcome newcomer. The clearest objection we have is the price, because when we look at the competition, it is clear that Oppo's pricing is at the high end.

Questions and answers

How is the battery life?

This phone is one of the new ones that takes battery capacity to another level, 7025 mAh is a lot and it shows in the battery life.

What does Oppo bring to the Swedish market?

As a new manufacturer here, Oppo themselves say they are focusing on young users and that the cameras are an important feature both for Oppo and for their young customers. For that to be true, they need to try a bit more, we will see what the X9 Pro offers when we get the chance to test it.

What presence does Oppo have here?

They are only sold at Power and have no own online store here. They also do not sell their phones through any Swedish mobile operator.

An alternative

We recently tested the Xiaomi 15T Pro which has a lot in common with Oppo's phone, but with a collaboration with Leica instead of Hasselblad. Xiaomi has an information panel around the selfie camera just like Oppo has and an expensive camera. A clear difference is that Xiaomi is several thousand kronor cheaper.

Recently launched Oppo Find X9, which we are testing in parallel with this phone, has much in common, but Oppo, which is new to the Swedish market, has set the price tag slightly higher.

Camera example

Both the main camera, the wide-angle, and the telephoto lens provide consistent quality with good colour reproduction, but Hasselblad makes limited difference.
