Almost two million apps deleted

Google has removed almost half of all apps

New rules have allowed Google to clean up a lot of less good apps.

Google Play has decreased by about 47 percent. This is shown in a report from the analytics company Appfigures. At the beginning of 2024, there were about 3.4 million apps in the store. Today, there are only around 1.8 million.

Google has introduced stricter rules for which apps are allowed to remain. Apps with very limited functionality, which only display static text or a single background image, are now being removed, which accounts for part of the decrease.

Google uses both automated systems and manual reviews to find apps that are fraudulent or do not work as they should. New EU regulations also require developers to provide their name and address. If they do not, the app is removed from the EU's app stores.

Despite the overall number of apps decreasing, more new apps are being released. This year, over 10,400 new apps have already been launched, which is an increase of 7.1 percent compared to last year.
