New foldables

Motorola Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra - First impression

Mobil is on site in New York to take a closer look at the newly launched Razr 60 family. It's about innovative materials and a lot of AI.

The new Razr 60 introduces several innovations and improvements compared to last year's models. The top model Razr Ultra naturally features the top chip Snapdragon 8 Elite, and it is to be utilised not only for smooth performance but also for AI functions.

One of the advantages of a foldable phone is that many of the functions should be accessible directly on the outer, smaller screen without needing to open the phone. Motorola is skilled at offering this. There are both fully-fledged apps and simpler widgets for quick actions. A new feature is shortcuts directly to functions in apps, so you can go straight to, for example, Instagram messages, thereby saving a few clicks. The outer screen is 4 inches and has a 165 hertz refresh rate so that everything runs smoothly. One of the drawbacks of a foldable can be durability, and in the new phone, Motorola has replaced the folding mechanism with a more durable one made with titanium parts. This makes the mechanism stronger without adding weight.

Materials and colours in focus

When it comes to the Razr family, colours and materials are obviously important. The phone is almost more of an accessory and is meant to reflect your personal style. This is most evident in Motorola's colours and materials. The Ultra, for example, comes in a new suede-like, soft textile-like material and in a wood version where wood fibres are used in the surface material. Yet the phone is protected against moisture and dirt according to IP48.

The cameras in the Razr 60 Ultra are three in number, and all are 50 megapixels each. This means a main camera and a wide-angle on the outside but no zoom camera. Instead, you can use the main camera, which should be able to offer 2x magnification with maintained quality thanks to the resolution. We will return to this once we have had the chance to test it. The selfie camera on the inner screen is also 50 megapixels, but you get better image quality if you use the rear camera and the outer screen as a viewfinder for your selfies. This is one of the advantages of this type of foldable phone.

Razr 60 for less money

In the more budget-oriented Razr 60, you get a smaller screen, so it doesn't cover as much of the outside, and the phone also has simpler performance. It also has a reduced camera setup, so you have to settle for the main camera at 50 megapixels but then a simpler wide-angle at only 13 megapixels.

Both phones have Moto AI, something Motorola emphasized repeatedly during the launch. It's clearly an important point to highlight, but Motorola has a slightly different approach. They have partnerships with Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Meta (which drives the summary of app notifications in Moto AI), and Google Gemini. When we ask about this, Motorola representatives say that AI is in an early phase and that having options is a strength, to see how the features develop and provide the best possible benefit in the future. Moto AI should be able to choose the service among these that is best suited for each task at any given moment.
