Trelenor could become a reality

"Telenor wants to buy Three Sweden - ready to merge"

Three has long openly stated that they want to merge with another operator and after years of rumours, Telenor is now said to be preparing a purchase of Three in Sweden.

Telenor is on the way to buying competitor Three and merging its operations in Sweden. This is claimed by several experts according to new information to Dagens Industri. Speculations about this are not new. Mobil has previously reported that Three and Telenor were already negotiating a merger in March 2023.

Three has long openly signalled that they want to see a merger and fewer operators in the Swedish market. What is new now is that Telenor's CEO has also clearly signalled that she is open to a purchase. Telenor is the third largest operator in Sweden and Three the fourth largest, which makes the deal easier to get through for competition reasons. Recently, competition authorities' views on mergers of this type have also loosened up.

Telenor currently has a joint mobile network they built and share with Tele2, while Three has its own network. Previously, when 3G was being rolled out, Three and Telenor shared a nationwide joint 3G network, but that cooperation has now ended.

In recent years, Three has merged with competitors in several markets. In Italy, they have merged with Wind, and in the United Kingdom, a merger with Vodafone is underway.
