Good value, but without really good notification replies from the watch

Review: Huawei Watch Fit 5 Pro - Sleek, feature-packed, great value for money

Its predecessor was already versatile and sleek, but Huawei has now added new features and made the watch itself better and more premium.

The Fit series is the member of Huawei's watch families best suited to appealing to as broad an audience as possible. This model, like its predecessors, has a slim form factor and a low price: in this case around SEK 3,000 for the Pro model tested here and SEK 2,000 for the simpler Watch Fit 5 base model.

Over the past year, Huawei has established its mobile payments service, so the Fit 5 series can be used to tap and pay in shops without needing to bring your phone. It works smoothly and, thanks to a partnership with Curve, virtually all payment cards are supported.

Convenient in every situation

Looking at and handling the Watch Fit 5 Pro, it feels comfortable and convenient. The display is larger and has thin bezels, making it easy to read without the watch becoming too large. This is useful during workouts, in everyday life and, not least, when I sleep wearing the watch. The included soft woven strap is also comfortable. In the many watch tests I have carried out, I have noticed that a comfortable strap is of the utmost importance and can determine how you perceive a watch. In this case, the strap contributes to the positive overall impression, and it dries quickly after I have showered or swum.

Huawei's watches, including this one, work with either iOS or Android phones, and the Huawei Health app that manages everything is available for both systems. It may seem unnecessary – I mean, why care about Android support if you have an iPhone and vice versa – but it does at least mean that you are not locked into one ecosystem and can choose your phone freely next time it is time to upgrade.

Many workouts before the battery needs charging

Over the full month I have tested the Huawei Watch Fit 5 Pro, I have managed to record around 30 workouts, mostly running and walking. At times during this period, I have also used other watches in parallel, and the Huawei Watch Fit 5 Pro has kept pace in virtually all measurements, from heart rate to GPS accuracy. When I have compared it with the latest Apple Watch, the number of steps has often been almost identical. One area where Huawei outperforms most, however, is battery life. The Fit 5 Pro is claimed to offer up to 10 days of battery life before it needs charging, but I have been fairly active and have instead got around a week's battery life. An hour of running with GPS and heart rate monitoring and so on uses around 4 per cent of the battery, while a full day, including workouts, usually uses around 12–13 per cent of the battery.

The watch charges wirelessly using the supplied charger or any standard wireless charger.

In addition to detailed workout tracking for walking, running, cycling and diving, there is also Huawei's golf mode, offering both course and driving range modes. The course mode features detailed maps of courses in Sweden and abroad. Other sports among the roughly 100 supported include triathlon, skiing, yoga, core training, various dances, padel, football and badminton – you will find most things, quite simply. Via the Huawei Health app, I can share workouts with, for example, Strava, and therefore compare myself with and be motivated by friends and family who do not use a Huawei watch.

Mini workouts in the office chair

In addition to regular workouts, the watch has a cute little panda that, in animated form, motivates you if you spend most of the day sitting at your desk. If I have been sitting still for a while, I receive a reminder and a short mini workout. It may involve heel raises, standing up from the chair using my arms, stretching my upper body or something similar. It is a more playful and enjoyable way of avoiding stiffness than the usual “you have not stood up for an hour” reminders we recognise from other watches.

Huawei's watches in this Fit 5 series do not have eSIM, and support for, for example, playing music on the watch or replying to notifications directly on the watch is unavailable when it is connected to an iPhone and limited on Android. However, in addition to usual features such as a calendar, weather, voice recording and navigation, the watch can also measure a range of aspects of heart health. Heart rate, of course, which we have already covered, but also ECG, arterial stiffness, blood oxygen levels, and it can also monitor your breathing while you sleep.

In the app on your phone, or indeed on the watch itself, you can then access insights and longer-term trends in the important areas of fitness, sleep and health. The Huawei Watch Fit 5 Pro is sleek and versatile, and Huawei has also refined the hardware, with a larger display, good brightness and both premium and practical materials despite a relatively low price.
