Durable and thin

Iphone 17 and Iphone Air launched

Apple's Iphone 17 is a minor upgrade, Iphone Air is more distinctive.

The iPhone 17 has a slightly larger screen than its predecessor, 6.3 inches thanks to thinner bezels around the display. Apple has also finally introduced a 120 Hz refresh rate even in its base model, which can now have an always-on display that refreshes at 1 Hz. The difference will be noticeable in smoother movements on the screen. The screen has also become brighter, with a maximum brightness of 3000 nits.

The screen has also become more durable. Ceramic Shield 2 has a new anti-scratch layer developed by Apple. The screen has also received anti-reflective treatment in 7 layers.

Under the hood, there is the new A19 chip package made in 3 nanometers with updates in all areas to increase performance. The new graphics engine is said to provide 8 hours more video playback time, and otherwise, Apple promises that the phone will last a day on a single charge.

The cameras are still two in number, but both have a 48-megapixel resolution. Here, Apple's sales pitch becomes so vague that it's hard to determine the features, but it's likely, as before, a main camera and a wide-angle camera, as well as two times zoom using the camera's high resolution.

The front camera contains bigger news. The sensor is almost doubled in size, and it is almost square. This means you can choose whether to take selfies in portrait or landscape mode without having to rotate the phone.

Otherwise, the most important news we note is that the phone now starts at 256 GB of storage instead of 128 GB.

The iPhone 17 can be pre-ordered from 12 September and will be released on 19 September. The price is 10,995 SEK for 256 GB and 13,995 SEK for 512 GB.

5.6 millimetre thin iPhone Air

The iPhone Air is of course a bigger news. The phone is only 5.6 mm thick, if you don't count the thick camera island of course. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is 5.8 millimetres. The iPhone 17 Air has a frame in polished titanium and front and back in Ceramic Shield, which is supposed to make the phone Apple's most durable phone yet. Thanks to new power-efficient circuits, including modem and network circuits that Apple has made themselves, the phone should last a day on a charge despite the thin format.

The physical SIM card has been removed to make the phone as thin as possible, and now only eSIM is available worldwide.

The screen is 6.5 inches, and otherwise has the same features as the iPhone 17, namely 120 Hz refresh rate and 3000 nits brightness as well as anti-reflective treatment. However, the phone has the faster A19 Pro chipset.

On the back is a single camera, but Apple claims that it is actually four lenses in one, from wide-angle to two times optical zoom. This is probably just sales talk because you can choose different crops on the camera's sensor.

Apple has its own series of accessories for the iPhone Air, including a transparent case that is less than a millimetre thick so as not to lose the effect of the thin format. They also have an extra thin power bank with a MagSafe mount.

The iPhone Air can be pre-ordered from 12 September and will be released on 19 September. The price is 13,995 SEK for 256 GB, 16,995 SEK for 512 GB, and 19,995 SEK for 1024 GB.
