Trelenor? Trelia? Trele2?

Three CEO Haval van Drumpt in front of 3Arena

Three Sweden seeks merger with one of the Swedish competitors

The CEO of operator Three wants to see fewer mobile operators in the Swedish market. Three has also advocated for and succeeded in mergers with competitors in other countries.

In Italy, Three merged with Wind, and in the United Kingdom, Three is about to merge with Vodafone. Three Sweden's CEO, Haval van Drumpt, wants to take the same path. He says this in an interview with Svd Näringsliv that was recently published.

Three is the smallest of the four major operators in Sweden with their own networks. They operate their own 5G network, a network they have heavily invested in, while competitors Tele2 and Telenor share a network and Telia is building its own.

The reason for Three's desire to merge, says Haval van Drumpt, is the low margins and the need for really large customer bases to have enough resources to make important investments. In the interview, Haval van Drumpt also says that he does not believe competition would suffer.

- In the USA, the average operator has 95 million customers, and in Europe around 4.5, says Haval van Drumpt to Svd, and he continues:

- If you have 90 million customers, there is room to make investments that are "nice to have", which can lead to something in the future. We do not have that luxury. We can only make investments that we are sure will yield results.

Which of the competitors he thinks would be the best fit he does not say in the interview with Svd Näringsliv. At the beginning of 2023, two years ago, it was confirmed that Three's owners were in talks with Telenor about a merger in the Swedish and Danish markets. However, that deal never materialised then.
