More performance, better heat management

Everything You Need to Know About the New iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

The iPhone 17 Pro models get a new look, improved cameras, more performance, and a more durable design with aluminium instead of titanium.

When Apple now releases the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, it comes with several clear innovations. The new platform with cameras on the back is what is first noticeable, but under the hood, there is a new cooling system and improved cameras with a larger sensor.

The invitation to Apple's event showed a heat map, which turned out to be a preview of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. In addition to the new and more powerful A19 Pro chip, the phones have also received a new heat dissipation system, a so-called vapor chamber, which is designed to dissipate heat and allow performance to be maximised without the device becoming too hot to hold.

It may not have been a major issue previously, as there has hardly been a lack of performance in the Pro models of the iPhone, but the new heat dissipation is intended to free up performance for, for example, gaming and advanced AI calculations that are run locally. It's worth noting that the aluminium in the chassis, which Apple has returned to from titanium in the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro, is significantly better at dissipating heat.

Returning to aluminium - not titanium in Pro

The casing of the iPhone 17 Pro models is not titanium like last year, but now instead aluminium as before and glass, specifically Apple's durable Ceramic Shield glass, also on the back, and on the front the upgraded Ceramic Shield 2 which is even more durable. The fact that the casing is aluminium and not titanium makes the phone slightly lighter.

The battery in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is slightly larger and the plateau around the cameras provides more internal space. The battery life is reported to be 39 hours of video playback.

The cameras on the back are, as before, three in number, but with 48 megapixels in all three sensors, which is an upgrade. This means that the telephoto camera, which has a 56 percent larger sensor than before, can now take pictures with 8x optical zoom and with digital zoom, you can take pictures with 40 times magnification instead of the previous 30x.

Apple themselves state that the images from the cameras should provide better colour reproduction, and details as well as less noise.

The cameras on the back have also received a few improvements for professional video handling, and the event was filmed entirely with the iPhone 17 Pro. More relevant for regular users is the updated selfie camera on the front, which, like in the iPhone 17, has a square shape, allowing you to choose whether to take pictures or film in landscape or portrait without having to rotate the phone.

The iPhone 17 Pro costs from 14,995 kronor and the iPhone 7 Pro Max from 16,995 kronor. Both can be pre-ordered from Friday, 12 September and will be released on 19 September.
