Wireless payments with Paypal on iPhone

Tap to Pay now with Paypal on iPhone

Paypal begins testing wireless payments on iPhone thanks to the EU's requirement for Apple to open up its technology.

Paypal will, in a few weeks, allow German iPhone users to make contactless payments via NFC directly from the Paypal app. This feature has been made possible thanks to the EU legislation Digital Markets Act (DMA) which has forced Apple to open the NFC circuit in the iPhone for third-party payment apps.

The payment solution operates independently from Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, providing users with more options. It will also be possible to set Paypal as the default app for payments, which will then be activated automatically when in contact with an NFC terminal or by double-pressing the side button.

Payments will be possible at all locations where Mastercard contactless payments are accepted. The app also provides an overview of both online and in-store purchases, making it easy to keep track of all transactions. Users can also choose to split larger purchases over 3, 6, 12, or 24 months.

Paypal also offers the option to activate offers in the app. By doing so, users can receive cashback when they pay contactlessly, providing extra incentive to choose Paypal when shopping in-store.

There is no information on whether the tests will be expanded outside Germany or when the service will be released in a full version.
