Review: Oppo Find X10 Pro Max – a well-considered flagship

Consistently high image quality from ultra-wide to telephoto is combined with plenty of other strengths.

I think we should start with the cameras, because the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max has three cameras on the back, each with 200 megapixels. What is interesting in this context is not the megapixel count itself, but that the phone delivers such consistently natural results all the way from wide angle to telephoto. With other mobile cameras, there is often a clear difference in quality between the main camera and, for example, the wide-angle camera in terms of colour reproduction, level of detail and light sensitivity, but here the results are instead remarkably consistent and true to life. It gives me the sense that the range around me – the subjects from close up to far away that I can capture with this camera – is expanding.

Some time ago, Oppo developed its Lumo True Image Engine. An image engine is essentially software that interprets and enhances images after you press the shutter, an increasingly important aspect of mobile photography today. It can be used to create a more expressive image, which is not unusual among other manufacturers, but Oppo has clearly chosen to stay as close to reality as possible. I think this is also clearly evident in the images. Natural variations between light and shadow are retained here, both in dark environments and when the sun is shining, and something of a documentary rendering of the subject is prioritised over applying effects such as contrast to bring out facial features in a portrait.

This is clearly a priority Oppo has made. Technically, they have put extra effort into achieving excellent colour reproduction and dynamic range, so that we get an image that is as true to life as possible, and they have succeeded well in achieving this with all three rear cameras.

Oppo has retained its collaboration with Hasselblad and, if you wish, you can take images at a full 200 megapixels with the ultra-wide-angle camera, the main camera and in telephoto mode with 3x optical zoom, in what is called Hasselblad Hi-Res. You can then crop the image afterwards and create your own images from details within it. Usually, the resolution is instead used to create 25-megapixel images with better light sensitivity, and even those images offer some scope if you want to crop them at the next stage. An image from the Find X10 Pro Max is usually between around 15 and 25 megabytes, making it larger than what most phones give you. More demanding in terms of storage, but also offering more possibilities.

The phone is also high-class when it comes to video. There is no physical camera button, but there is what is called the Snap Key. It is a button on the left-hand side of the phone that is clearly inspired by Apple’s Action button on the iPhone, but here it leads by default to Oppo’s AI service, Mind Space. It is a memory bank where you can add content you come across and then search and ask questions about everything that has been saved. You can also choose another function for this button, such as a camera button, taking a screenshot, activating the torch, silent mode and more.

If that button has been inspired to some extent by Apple, we can also see traces of it in the interface. The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max comes with Android 17 and Oppo's own ColorOS, which here has gained glass-like transparency in many areas. We see it most clearly in the clock on the home screen, in notifications, in the smart sidebar with shortcuts and in quick settings. The appearance can be customised with themes, however, and there are both included options and ones you can buy.

The appearance of the hardware itself is genuinely elegant. My review unit is grey, but it has a raised section in the glass around the camera module on the back, allowing it to integrate neatly and seamlessly with the rest of the rear panel. Metal then surrounds the cameras and the separate section containing the flash and colour sensor. It feels luxurious and understated at the same time. The phone is also available in a white version with a more prominent Hasselblad logo.

Taking a closer look at the front, the display is impressive. Like the back, it is protected by Oppo's own protective glass, and the screen offers both excellent colour reproduction, slim bezels and good brightness even on sunnier days. There is support for an always-on display, so I can see the time, notifications and more even in standby mode, and it has a fast refresh rate of up to 144Hz. This is only used in selected games, but up to 120Hz is otherwise supported and the system remains responsive at all times. Performance comes from MediaTek's latest flagship chip, manufactured on a 2nm process, which, aided by efficient cooling, ensures high performance on a par with several of the very latest flagships.

The MediaTek chip is also intended to help with on-device AI. Oppo offers, among other things, translation, the Mind Space I mentioned earlier, writing assistance and transcription, as well as AI-powered image editing, but they do not support Swedish as a language and most also require an internet connection, so they are not handled locally but in the cloud. The image editing works well when you have a connection and can, for example, remove distracting objects and realistically fill in what is missing behind them.

Questions and answers

Is this the best you can get in terms of a mobile camera?

It does not have the one-inch sensor found in the best competitors, and I would guess that we have a Find X10 Ultra to look forward to. However, it supports Oppo's telephoto lens accessory with 10x optical zoom.

Stylish and durable?

Yes, the design details, such as the sculpted glass back, have not compromised durability, so it can withstand water even under pressure, making it safe to swim with, and the camera has a dedicated underwater mode.

What does Hasselblad do?

In the camera app, they are present in the form of a hi-res mode and a panorama mode, and they are also said to have contributed to the development of the camera lenses.

An alternative

The clearest camera competitor is the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.

Consistently excellent colour reproduction and details close to reality.
