New in the Find app

New in Android: Share location with family and friends for free - even iPhone

Google's app "Find My Device" can now show the location for your family and friends. It even works if you want to share location with iPhone users.

Not just phones, headsets, and gadget finder tags. Now Google's Android app Find My Device (Google Play link for download) can also show the location of people. In this way, it becomes a competent counterpart to Apple's Find My app and a competitor to paid services like Life 360.

Directly in the app now, if you make sure to update to the latest available version, there is a new tab at the bottom that shows people. It is in beta.

You can add people here from your contacts, and they will receive both a notification on their phone and an email informing them of your request. You can share your location with people, and then they can choose whether to share their location back or just see yours. You can either share your location for a limited time, for example, an hour, or for a longer period.

All of this is new in the Find My Device app, but location sharing has previously been available in the Google Maps app, and the new feature connects to this. This also means you can share your location with iPhone users, as long as they use the Google Maps app on their phone.
