Measured upgrade pace

3 out of 4 use iOS 18

There has been no rush to upgrade to iOS 18, and it's even slower for iPad OS.

Apple's launch of iOS 18 in September 2024 took a hit when several of the major new features were not included, but would come in later updates.

Now Apple reports figures showing that the upgrade rate to the iOS 18 generation has not been a resounding success, although it is roughly in line with the rate for iOS 17.

According to Apple, 76 percent of all iPhone devices introduced in the last four years are using some version of iOS 18, while 19 percent are still using some version of iOS 17 and 5 percent some older iOS version.

As a comparison, 68 percent of all active iPhone devices, regardless of when they were introduced, use iOS 18. Here too, 19 percent run iOS 17, but 13 percent run an older version.

However, it is more than the upgrade rate for iPad OS, here 63 percent of all devices launched in the last few years run iOS 18, 27 percent run iOS 17, and 10 percent an older version. 53 percent of all active iPad devices run iOS 18, 28 percent iOS 17, and a full 19 percent an older version.
