Meta's messaging service WhatsApp may soon be classified as a "Very Large Online Platform" (VLOP) according to the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA). According to Meta's latest quarterly report, WhatsApp has now reached 46.8 million monthly users, exceeding the threshold of 45 million users required for VLOP classification.

Being classified as a VLOP means that WhatsApp will be subject to the EU's stricter regulations for large online platforms. This includes, among other things, tougher requirements for content moderation, transparency around algorithms, and measures to prevent the spread of illegal material. The goal of the DSA is to create a safer digital environment for users within the EU by holding large platforms accountable for the content that is spread.

Meta's other services, Facebook and Instagram, are already classified as VLOPs. With WhatsApp on its way to joining this category, Meta faces the challenge of ensuring that all these platforms meet the EU's requirements. This could lead to significant changes in how WhatsApp handles user data and content moderation.

The EU has so far identified around 20 services and search engines as VLOPs or "Very Large Online Search Engines" (VLOSE). This list includes leading platforms that must adhere to the strict rules to protect users and promote responsible online behaviour.
