Amazon has announced that the company will shut down its app store for Android devices on 20 August this year. In a message to developers, Amazon states that new apps will no longer be able to be submitted after this date. Additionally, the company's digital currency, "Coins", which could previously be used to purchase games and apps, will be discontinued on the same day. Users with outstanding Coins will have their money refunded.

Despite the shutdown, Amazon's app store will continue to function on the company's own devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet. This means that users of these devices will still have access to apps and content through Amazon's ecosystem.

Since 2011, Amazon has attempted to compete with Google by offering an alternative app store ecosystem on the Android platform. The decision to end this venture marks a significant shift in the company's strategy. Previously, Amazon also tried to establish itself in the mobile market with its Fire Phone, a project that did not succeed.

Additionally, the company plans to shut down its app store for Windows on 5 March.
