Xiaomi achieves what even Apple hasn't done yet

How the Xiaomi phone can become the Mac computer's and iPhone's best friend

You can share files and interact with all the Xiaomi phone's apps directly on the Mac computer's screen. This is more than what you can do with an iPhone from a Mac. Here we show you how it's done.

One of the biggest news when Apple updated its systems in the spring of 2024 was that you would be able to display the iPhone screen on your Mac computer and control everything directly from there, even if the phone was charging in another room. That feature never came to Sweden, but the fact is that it is already available now, provided you use a phone from Xiaomi. All you need is to download the right app to your Mac computer. 

Xiaomi has shown a lot of interest in integrating its products with Apple's. For example, we have previously reported the news that Xiaomi wants to offer the possibility to connect an Apple Watch to a Xiaomi phone. It is not yet possible and probably lies much in Apple's hands, but the fact is that Xiaomi, with its latest Hyper OS, which has come to both new and older Xiaomi phones, already offers a range of different useful features for those who also have a Mac or iPhone. 

Both in the App Store for iPhone and in the Mac App Store for Mac computers, the app Xiaomi Interconnectivity is available, and it is the key to all these new services.

For all this to work, the latest version of Xiaomi's interface Hyper OS is required. It is Hyper OS 2, which is not only available in Xiaomi 14 and 15 Ultra but has also long been released in earlier models from Xiaomi, such as the Xiaomi 14 series, in the form of an update. 

File transfer to and from iPhone with iOS app

By downloading the Xiaomi Interconnectivity app to an iPhone, that phone suddenly gains the ability to speak the same language as Xiaomi's phones and tablets. This means you can easily send and receive files, pictures, and videos quickly and wirelessly between Xiaomi devices and iPhone. 

The only thing you need to do to get started is to open the app on your iPhone (or iPad). Now you can wirelessly send and receive files, pictures, and videos between iPhone, iPad, and Xiaomi devices. 

On the Xiaomi device being used, you should activate Xiaomi Share. You do this in the quick selection dropdown menu, or when you select the pictures or videos you want to send. As soon as you do this, your device will appear as accessible even in the iPhone/iPad app.

Display and control the Xiaomi phone's screen on your Mac computer

This feature was launched by Apple for iPhone in spring 2024, but it has not yet arrived in Sweden. Therefore, Xiaomi is ahead of Apple itself with this capability on Apple's own computers. 

By downloading the Xiaomi Interconnectivity app to your Mac computer, you gain several opportunities to communicate wirelessly directly with your Xiaomi phone. One of the possibilities includes displaying the phone's screen directly on the computer screen and controlling all the phone's functions from there. 

This can be useful if you are working on the computer but have the phone charging a bit away. The devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. When this is the case, you can start the app on your Mac computer and then just select the function called Home Screen Plus. There you can choose your phone and freely control it remotely. 

You can use the computer's keyboard to type directly into the phone's apps, but for example, the PIN code to log in must be entered by clicking on the screen's numbers with the mouse. When you unlock and use the phone from your computer, it is also unlocked in practice, so if someone passes by your phone while it is charging, they can peek. 

File transfer between Mac and Xiaomi with Mac app

With Xiaomi's Mac app Xiaomi Interconnectivity, you can not only share the screen but also files. Sharing files works similarly to Apple's own Airdrop. Once you have downloaded Xiaomi's app to the computer, you can easily and wirelessly send and receive files from Xiaomi devices. On the Xiaomi phone, you should activate Xiaomi Share. You do this in the dropdown menu, or at the step where you have selected which files, movies, or pictures you want to send. Then it's just a matter of choosing the Mac computer as the recipient or, if you want to do the equivalent, in the Mac computer, select your Xiaomi device in the Xiaomi Interconnectivity app as the recipient.
