Despite trade restrictions against Huawei, the company is highlighted by Nvidia as a competent and tough competitor.

In the ongoing AI race where more or less all mobile manufacturers highlight their AI features, it is the American Nvidia, which manufactures the chips needed in AI development, that is constantly at the centre of discussions. Giants like Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Google are all among the largest customers and depend on Nvidia's chips for their AI development.

When Nvidia reported its latest results last night Swedish time, it was even better profit and revenue than the high expectations the market had, but Nvidia also highlighted increasing Chinese competition.

Despite extensive American trade barriers against China that limit Chinese companies' ability to create and obtain advanced chips, their competitiveness in the field has increased. This has of course also been highlighted in connection with the noted AI service Deepseek originating from China.

"Very competitive"

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC that Huawei and other Chinese companies are now very, very competitive in this area.

The chips Huawei uses often create discussions, as the company rarely clearly reports specifications since they can no longer use American suppliers and are referred to the domestic Chinese market.

Huawei's latest flagship phone, Huawei Mate 70 series, which was launched in November last year, is powered by a Kirin 9020 chip developed by Huawei's own subsidiary Hisilicon. The Kirin 9020 is said to be manufactured using a 7-nanometre process, while, for example, Apple's and Qualcomm's latest A18 and Snapdragon 8 Elite are both based on more advanced 3-nanometre technology, where a lower number is more advanced.

The Mate 70 series is sold in only a few countries globally, while the Huawei Pura 70 series is available for sale in several European countries, though not in Sweden. Here, Huawei is currently focusing on watches and headphones, although a return of the company's phones here in the future is not excluded.
