How the Vasaloppet is Broadcasted via Telia's 5G Network - Drones Instead of Helicopter

Instead of using helicopters, Swedish TV will broadcast the Vasaloppet for the first time this year using drones and Telia's 5G network.

Already on Saturday, the new technology was used for the live broadcast of Tjejvasan. Using drones instead of helicopters brings several advantages. Previously, SVT has used helicopters and also had planes circling at high altitudes, receiving TV signals from snowmobiles filming along the track. Now these are replaced by five drones that send the TV image directly via Telia's 5G network, which according to test reports is said to have "almost full coverage" along the entire route. SVT also has skiing reporters who report along the route.

The switch from helicopter to drone is expected to make the broadcast less weather-dependent since drones are not nearly as sensitive to harsh weather as helicopters. There will also be more different camera angles for viewers, and with five drones, SVT can, for example, follow both the men's and women's leaders simultaneously. The new camera technology is expected to be able to transmit images in high quality with virtually no delay. All this also means significantly reduced environmental impact.

Vasaloppet 2025, which is the 101st in order and as usual stretches 90 km from Sälen to Mora, will be broadcast on Sunday, 2 March on SVT and SVT Play.
