Higher wireless power

Samsung improves wireless charging

A new circuit for wireless charging will, among other things, significantly shorten charging times.

Samsung has introduced a new chip for wireless charging with the uninspiring name S2MIW06. The chip is a Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) specifically designed to enhance wireless charging in devices such as mobile phones.

The highlight here is support for charging powers of up to 50W, which can be compared to the most common existing chips that can handle up to 15W.

The new chip supports all current profiles in the Qi standard, including the Baseline Power Profile, which is the most used, the Extended Power Profile, which increases speed up to 15 W, and the Magnetic Power Profile, which was launched with Qi2 and uses magnets to improve alignment and increase speed up to 25 W. It also supports the Qi 2.2 standard, which will be launched later this year.

It remains to be seen when the circuit will appear in commercial devices.
